Artist: Ken Dorros

About seven years ago, after toiling as a corporate lawyer for 19 years, I tucked away my old briefcase and turned my full attention to painting. For over three years I studied at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, which provides exceptional foundation studies in the classical academy tradition.

My new office is an outdoor one. While I often paint at various rural and coastal sites here in Connecticut, I also paint on location throughout New England, including some favorite locations along the rustic Maine coast. I also enjoy doing still life paintings, which lend themselves to exciting uses of color and composition.

Painting changes how you see the world, particularly how light, color and atmosphere are observed. A strong painting should convey the essence of those elements from nature to canvas. Unlike photography, oil paint is a dynamic medium that can be used in a way that allows each viewer to interpret and complete a painting in a unique and personal way. That’s the delicate balance between painting in a representational style and conveying something emotional and expressive. It’s about leaving something unsaid.

I consider myself extremely fortunate to be pursuing this wonderful second career. I appreciate the encouragement and support many of you have given me. And thanks for letting me share my paintings with you.
