Artist: Paul Barrett
Influences are many and various. I enjoy the Impressionists, Cubism, the geometric abstracts of Mondrian, and the principles behind Chinese and Japanese art. Photographically among other things I try to capture the American Vernacular feeling of Walker Evans and David Plowden. And I love the movies in graphic terms, everything from Technicolor to Film Noir. And, as is evident, I’m also motivated by the blast of primary colors of the Fauves and Expressionists. Even comic book art.
I try to get as close as possible. To all these influences in photographs with mimimal manipulation other than enhancing saturation. Most are non-digital in-camera compositions with occasional use of color filters and experiments with focus.
My course of study has included BAC San Francisco State University and Masters Degree from Wesleyan in Liberal Arts, plus continuing independent studies in all forms of graphic art. But basically, it’s just a whole lot of just “looking at pictures”.
